It is still car-led, with poor walkability and limited mixed-use neighbourhoods, although homes tend to offer reasonable space. The pace is moderate rather than frantic, but distances and road dependence still shape the week.

Walkability is poor outside the historic core, distances between neighbourhoods are real, and a vehicle is close to essential for most of daily life. Old San Juan and a few pockets aside, the urban fabric leans suburban and dispersed.

The honest weak point. Kingston carries one of the higher crime burdens in the region, and perceived safety, especially after dark, ranks low against Caribbean and Latin American peers like Panama City and Bogotá.

Safety is a mixed picture. Serious violent crime and a high homicide figure cluster in specific areas and rarely touch visitors or most residents, but they're real and worth understanding.

English removes a major barrier, but it does not create a deep local market. Care is workable but stretched.

San Juan's local market is thinner than its easy English access suggests. Care follows the American model, which cuts both ways.

As the birthplace of reggae and the dancehall scene, Kingston has a music and live-arts life that few cities its size can match, plus strong local food and a lively after-dark culture. Kingston is gritty and littered, its maintenance uneven and its civic squares weak, leaving the public realm scrappy.

Puerto Rico punches above its size culturally. Old San Juan is kept handsome, its colonial plazas, paseos and fort esplanades cared-for, but the wider city is uneven and still bears storm wear.
