Accra
Accra sprawls low and wide, built around cars rather than feet, so walkability is poor and getting around usually means a vehicle. Some neighbourhoods are pleasant and roomy, with more housing space than denser capitals, but the overall fabric is loose and traffic-shaped.
Lagos
A true megacity, dense and endlessly expanding, with one of the highest tempos of any city in the region. Walkability is poor and life is built around cars, so getting anywhere means sitting in traffic.
Safety
Accra
Serious violent crime is rare, and Accra has a reputation as one of the steadier capitals in the region, with relatively stable politics. The everyday concerns are pettier: opportunistic theft and chaotic roads, where traffic safety is genuinely weak.
Lagos
Safety is a serious concern. Petty crime, perceived risk and night-time safety all rate poorly, political stability is shaky, and the roads are dangerous.
Work and healthcare
Accra
Accra is well placed for English-language work, but its overall market remains shallow. Medical care is the city's soft spot, with limited specialist depth, strained hospital capacity, and few doctors relative to the population.
Lagos
Lagos has a deep and energetic local market, with especially good access to English-language work and a strong startup scene. Healthcare is thin and uneven.
Culture and public life
Accra
Local culture is strong and proudly worn, with a lively music and arts scene and good nightlife. Accra is dense and grubby, open drains and litter the norm, with little built public space beyond a few seafront stretches and plazas in a mostly car-bound city.
Lagos
The music and art scene is world-famous and rivals far bigger capitals, nightlife runs late and loud, and local culture is everywhere and unapologetic. Lagos is a megacity at full congestion: waste piles up, upkeep is severely neglected, and genuine public space is scarce in the gridlocked sprawl.
Summary
Cheap-looking rents are a poor reason to choose either city. The one-bedroom housing measure nears or exceeds typical local pay in both. Lagos's banking, fintech and entertainment networks can justify a move tied to the right work; Accra trades some of that commercial depth for higher safety and healthcare results.
