Singapore vs Surabaya

A dense, vertical, highly walkable city where almost everything is reachable without a car. Neighbourhoods are well-planned and mixed-use, the pace is brisk and corporate, and public order is total.

Singapore is a formidable professional hub, with a deep English-language market, very low unemployment, and strong networks across established and newer industries. World-class hospitals, reliable emergency care, and medical staff who speak English fluently.

Surabaya offers a steady local base and low unemployment, but the career ceiling is modest. Care is functional but middling.

Food is the headline, one of the great eating cities anywhere, where hawker stalls and fine dining sit side by side. The catch is cost: much of daily life is paid-for and mall-mediated, with little genuinely free beyond the hawker centres and parks.

Strong on everyday Indonesian eating, with rumah makan, warungs, and a growing cafe habit, though the dining ceiling is lower than Bali's. Surabaya is a hot, industrial Indonesian city with heavy traffic and only modest upkeep, its life pulled toward malls and cars rather than any walkable square, though a few renovated parks help.
