Living in Lyon

Lyon has a continental four-season climate: grey, raw winters and increasingly hot, sticky summers in the Rhône valley. Sunshine is modest and humidity sits on the high side, so the year can feel overcast for long stretches. Air quality, on the other hand, is genuinely good for a city this size.

The real draw is what lies just beyond the city. The Alps and the hills of Beaujolais put serious hiking, skiing and weekend escapes within a short drive, and there is good access to forests, rivers and the Rhône itself. Inside the city, green space per resident is thin, and the sea is a long haul away.

Compact and built for walking, with handsome stone districts like Vieux Lyon and the Presqu'île that mix homes, shops and cafes at street level. It carries the texture of a major city at a more human scale than Paris, though flats tend to be small and the overall pace is calmer than the capital.

Lyon keeps its centre tidy, though grime creeps into the older corners. The two rivers are the city's great public gift — the Saône and Rhône quais, the grand squares of the Presqu'île, all walkable. Festivals like the Fête des Lumières and riverside summers cost nothing; it stays cheaper than Paris.

Broadly safe by big-city standards, with low serious violence and reassuring road safety. Pickpocketing and the usual urban petty crime exist around busy quarters and transit, and perceptions of night-time safety land middling rather than excellent. France's wider political turbulence is a background note here.

Care quality is high and out-of-pocket exposure stays low once a resident is inside the French system, with strong hospitals and dependable emergency cover. The catches are familiar across France: getting onto a regular doctor's list can take patience, and English-speaking practitioners are harder to count on than in some European cities.

A sound place to raise children, with solid schools, a protective work-life culture and generous parental-leave norms typical of France. Childcare is workable, and there is decent room for outdoor childhood given the nearby hills. Finding affordable family-sized housing is the pressure point, as it is across much of urban France.

A real economic centre with strength in pharma, biotech, banking and manufacturing, and a deeper job market than smaller French cities, though it sits clearly in Paris's shadow for scale, salaries and senior roles. The startup and tech scene is modest, and most workplaces still run primarily in French.

This is the heart of French gastronomy, with an unusually deep restaurant culture from old-school bouchons to fine dining, plus strong cafes and a respectable museum and arts calendar. Nightlife and the music scene are good without rivalling Paris or Berlin, and English-only options thin out fast outside the centre.

Day-to-day life runs in French, with English a useful but secondary fallback, so building local ties moves faster for those who learn the language. The city is welcoming in a reserved, slow-burn French way rather than instantly open, and its international crowd is smaller than the capital's. Patience and some French go a long way.

One of Lyon's quiet strengths. The metro and tram network is genuinely good, cycling lanes are widespread, and high-speed rail links to Paris and across Europe are excellent. Internet and utilities are reliable. The weak link is administrative digitisation, where official processes still lean analogue and slow.

Firmly secular and socially liberal in the French mould, with low traditionalism and broadly progressive attitudes on gender and LGBTQ life. It reads a touch more conventional than Paris or Berlin on the social-liberal edge, and openness to outsiders is moderate rather than effusive, but the public culture is open and tolerant.

Settling in takes grit. French bureaucracy is famously heavy, housing hunts are competitive and paperwork-laden, and the language barrier is real for non-French speakers. Visa and work-authorisation paths are standard for France, neither easy nor unusually hard, and tax and banking admin demand patience in the early months.
