Living in Kolkata

Kolkata's open-market one-bedroom rent on a new lease is about $104 per month. That is roughly 48% of one typical employee's mean net pay, a rent burden labelled tight alone.

Mild winters give Kolkata its most comfortable period, but much of the year is hot, humid and often muggy. Rainy-grey conditions are common, and the combination of poor air quality and high extreme-weather exposure makes climate a serious daily trade-off. Seasonal darkness is not the issue here.

Kolkata is a flat, built-up delta city with little green space to spare per resident, noticeably less than Bengaluru. The Hooghly river gives it a waterfront, and there are forests and a few worthwhile escapes within weekend reach, including the Sundarbans mangroves to the south. For beaches, mountains or serious hiking, though, it is poorly placed.

This is a dense, tightly packed city where life happens on the street and most errands are a short walk or a tram ride rather than a drive. Mixed-use streets and a relatively low reliance on cars are real strengths. Apartments tend to be cramped, however, and walkability is held back by crowded, uneven pavements.

Kolkata's colonial fabric is decaying, its dense streets marked by litter and monsoon grime. Yet the built realm runs deep — the Maidan, Victoria Memorial, riverfront ghats and grand old squares. It's the cheapest of the metros, with an intense, near-theatrical free street culture and festivals that spill into every lane.

By the numbers Kolkata is one of India's safer big cities, with low homicide and violent-crime levels and a reputation for feeling calm after dark, ahead of Bengaluru and Manila on perceived safety. Petty theft exists, as in any dense metro. The weaker spot is broader political stability, which can be turbulent.

Healthcare is middling. The city has respected hospitals and private care is affordable by global standards, and English is widely spoken in clinics, which eases things for newcomers. Doctor density across the country is thin, though, and emergency care reliability lags behind what an arrival from a wealthier system would expect.

For families Kolkata lands in the middle. Childcare is plentiful and cheap, and the work culture leaves a bit more room for home life than the harder-charging metros. Schools are average, outdoor space for kids is limited, and parental-leave support is modest, so the experience leans more on family networks than on public provision.

English-language work gives Kolkata some access to jobs, but the local market is narrow and professional networks are thin. Typical local pay is low in the wider comparison, while remote work is adequate rather than strong. A small startup ecosystem leaves fewer routes for fast career growth.

Culture is where Kolkata shines. It has a deep, distinctly Bengali identity in food, film, theatre and the arts that outshines most Indian cities, with strong museums, a serious music and art scene, and excellent vegetarian and street food. Cafe culture runs deep too. The one gap is a comparatively small international community.

Bengali is the language of daily life, with Hindi and English both widely used, so newcomers can function in English from the start and pick up the rest over time. The city is known for being talkative and welcoming to outsiders, though the expat scene is small, so making local Bengali friends matters more than slotting into an international bubble.

Infrastructure is a patchwork. The metro and tram network, plus strong intercity rail links, give Kolkata better public transport than many Indian peers. Against that, internet speeds are slow, cycling infrastructure is almost nonexistent, and traffic remains a daily grind despite a relatively contained congestion index.

Kolkata is moderately liberal and secular by Indian standards, with a long left-leaning intellectual tradition and reasonable openness toward outsiders and LGBTQ residents. Gender equality is improving but still uneven, and civic orderliness, things like queueing and rule-following, is loose. Socially it feels more progressive than conservative.

Daily communication is one of Kolkata's easier adjustments because the language barrier is low. The paperwork is less forgiving: bureaucracy, tax complexity and banking all add time, while work authorization remains a process to plan for. The tax burden is relatively light, even if administration is not.
