Living in Kochi

Kochi's open-market one-bedroom rent on a new lease is about €131 per month. That is roughly 65% of one typical employee's mean net pay, a rent burden labelled sharing likely.

Tropical and coastal, warm right through the year with no real winter and almost no dark season. The trade-off is humidity that rarely lets up and a long, heavy southwest monsoon that brings months of grey, rainy days. Air quality is clean by Indian standards, well clear of the haze that settles over Delhi or Kolkata.

This is where Kochi shines. The Kerala backwaters, rivers and lagoons are right at hand, the beaches are close, and the Western Ghats put forest and hill country within a weekend's reach. Inside the city itself, formal parks and green space are scarce, so the outdoors here means water and what lies just beyond the edges.

Small and low-rise by Indian standards, far more compact than the sprawl of Bengaluru or the megacity scale of Bangkok. The pace is genuinely relaxed. Walkability is limited and most trips lean on a car or auto-rickshaw, but neighbourhoods are pleasant and homes tend to come with more space than in the bigger metros.

Kochi feels greener and cleaner than the northern metros, Kerala's calmer pace showing in the streets. The Fort Kochi waterfront, Chinese fishing nets and colonial squares give it a gentle public realm. Daily life is cheap, with the free waterfront, the art biennale and festivals offering plenty without spending.

Among the safer cities in the region. Violent and petty crime are low, the streets feel calm after dark, and Kerala has a long reputation for orderliness that residents notice day to day. Traffic is the realistic hazard rather than crime. The national political-stability backdrop scores lower, reflecting India broadly rather than anything specific to the city.

Kerala's health system is one of the better ones in India, and Kochi has solid private hospitals and emergency care. Out-of-pocket costs are manageable, and care is widely delivered in English, which removes a real friction for newcomers. The constraint is sheer staffing: doctors per head are thin, so popular hospitals can be crowded.

A workable place to raise children. Child safety is good, childcare is both available and cheap, and the work-life rhythm is gentler than in India's high-pressure tech hubs. Schools and family housing are decent without being exceptional, and the easy access to water and the outdoors gives kids room beyond the city.

The weak spot. Kochi is not Bengaluru: the job market is smaller, salaries are low even by Indian standards, and the professional network is thin. Where it works is remote and English-language work, both well supported here, plus a modest but real tech and startup scene. For an on-the-ground local career, the bigger metros offer far more.

Strong local character rooted in Keralan and old port-town traditions, with good museums, a real art and music scene, and standout vegetarian and vegan food. Cafes and restaurants are plentiful if a notch below Bengaluru or Bangkok. Nightlife, though, is quiet; Kerala's licensing keeps the after-dark scene subdued compared with most regional peers.

Settling in is relatively easy for an Indian city. Malayalam is the local language, but English is spoken widely and Hindi is common, so the day-to-day language barrier is low. Locals are notably open to outsiders, and the broadly secular, even-keeled social culture makes it straightforward for a newcomer to find footing.

A mixed picture. The international airport is well connected, intercity rail is reasonable, utilities are fairly reliable, and traffic congestion is lighter than in Bengaluru or Manila. The gaps are local mobility and connectivity: public transport is basic, cycling infrastructure barely exists, and home internet speeds lag the regional leaders.

Middle-of-the-road and fairly easygoing. Kerala leans more secular and socially moderate than much of India, gender attitudes are relatively progressive for the region, and the city is genuinely welcoming to foreigners. It is not a liberal frontier on the order of Berlin, but it is open, tolerant and comfortable for most newcomers.

The low language barrier is the big advantage; English carries a newcomer a long way and cultural adjustment is gentler than in much of Asia. Against that, Indian bureaucracy and tax paperwork are heavy going, and visa and work-authorization rules are tighter than the easy entry of Bangkok or Manila. Banking and admin take patience.
