Living in Chennai

The weather is the hardest part of life here. Summers are punishing, with high heat and heavy coastal humidity that lingers long into the year, and the monsoon brings real cyclone and flooding risk. Winters stay warm and pleasant by Indian standards, and there is plenty of sun, but the muggy stretch is relentless.

Chennai's saving grace outdoors is the coast, with a long sandy shoreline and easy ocean access that landlocked Bengaluru cannot match. Inland it is short on green, with little park space per resident and limited forest or hill country nearby. Weekend escapes to the Tamil hinterland and the Western Ghats foothills are doable but not on the doorstep.

A sprawling, dense metro built around cars and two-wheelers rather than pedestrians. Walkability is poor, footpaths are patchy and getting around without a vehicle is a grind, though the pace feels a notch calmer than Bengaluru's tech frenzy. Neighbourhoods and suburbs are functional rather than polished.

Chennai is dense and dusty, prone to monsoon flooding, with only stretches of order amid the grime. Built public space is sparse, though Marina Beach gives the city one long shared promenade. Life here costs almost nothing — temples, festivals and the free beach carry most of the daily enjoyment.

Chennai has a reputation as one of India's safer big cities, with low homicide and modest street crime, and residents generally feel secure moving around. Traffic is the genuine daily danger rather than violence. The broader backdrop of national political volatility weighs on the longer-term stability picture.

A real strength, and one of the reasons people fly in from across the region. The city is a recognised medical hub with strong hospitals and care quality, and English is spoken throughout the system, so navigating treatment is straightforward. Out-of-pocket costs stay manageable, though doctors per head remain thin nationwide.

A workable place to raise children, helped by cheap and available childcare and family housing that is feasible to find. Schools land around average, and the local work culture leaves only moderate room for family time. Safety for kids is reasonable, though play space and outdoor childhood options are limited by the city's thin greenery.

Chennai anchors a serious industrial economy, strong in automotive manufacturing and IT services, and English-language roles are plentiful. Unemployment is low and the professional base is deep. The hard ceiling is pay: absolute salaries are very low, among the lowest in the dataset, and ambitious tech talent often drifts to Bengaluru for the bigger ecosystem and packages.

This is where Chennai shines, as a stronghold of Tamil culture, Carnatic music and classical dance with a confident local identity. Vegetarian and vegan eating is exceptional, among the best anywhere in the data, and the temple and arts calendar runs deep. Nightlife is the weak spot, quiet and conservative compared with Mumbai or even Bengaluru.

Tamil is the language of daily life, but English goes a long way across work, healthcare and educated circles, so the language barrier for a newcomer is low. The culture is warm but traditional and family-centred, and integrating takes patience. The international community is present but modest, smaller than Bengaluru's expat-heavy scene.

A mixed bag. The metro and airport give decent connectivity, intercity rail is solid, and traffic flows a touch better than in peer Indian metros. But fixed broadband lags well behind global norms, utilities and power can be unreliable, and cycling infrastructure is close to nonexistent.

Socially Chennai sits on the more traditional, conservative side, rooted in long-standing Tamil customs and a strong religious public life. Gender attitudes and LGBTQ acceptance are middling and shifting slowly, more so among younger urban residents. It is somewhat open to outsiders, though less cosmopolitan than the bigger global-facing Indian hubs.

Settling in is eased considerably by how far English carries across the city, so the language gap rarely bites. The friction is administrative: Indian bureaucracy is heavy, tax paperwork is genuinely complex, and banking and visa processes test patience. Cultural adjustment is real but softened by the city's welcoming streak.
