Living in Antalya

Antalya's open-market one-bedroom rent on a new lease is about €358 per month. That is roughly 70% of one typical employee's mean net pay, a rent burden labelled sharing likely.

This is the headline. Long, dry, sunny summers, mild winters when much of Europe is grey, and clean coastal air that beats most large Turkish cities. The trade-off is the heat of high summer, which turns heavy and sticky for a stretch, but the off-season pulls people outdoors year-round.

Few cities pair sea and mountains this well. The beaches are about as good as it gets, the Taurus range and pine forest sit right behind town, and hiking and weekend escapes are first-rate, with the Lycian Way running along the coast. Inner-city green space is the weaker note, thinner than what a Berlin offers.

A spread-out, low-rise coastal city rather than a tight urban core. Density is low and a car helps for much of daily life, though the central districts and old town are walkable enough. Apartments tend to run larger than in Istanbul, and the overall pace is calm.

Antalya is a tidy resort town, its old town cared-for even as the edges sprawl. The waterfront, marina and old-town squares give it a real promenade life. It's cheap, the beaches are free and the seasonal markets and street life run lively — though much of it ebbs out of season.

Violent and petty crime sit low, traffic feels manageable for Turkey, and most residents move around comfortably after dark. The serious caveat is national-level political stability, which scores at the floor here, the kind of background uncertainty worth weighing before a long-term commitment.

Care is solid and very affordable, with private hospitals that serve a large medical-tourism trade and out-of-pocket costs far below Western Europe. Hospital access and everyday quality hold up. Doctor density per resident is thin, however, and English in clinical settings is patchy outside the private system.

An easy place to raise children outdoors, with beaches, parks, and a gentle climate that keeps kids outside most of the year, plus family-sized housing that is actually affordable. The softer spots are institutional: schools are average, and parental-leave and work-life support trail what Lisbon or Berlin provide.

The weakest axis by far. The local economy leans on tourism and real estate, the professional job market is thin, salaries are low, and there is little startup or tech scene to plug into. It works for remote earners on foreign income, far less so for anyone needing a local career ladder.

Turkish food culture runs deep and the restaurant and cafe scene is comfortable, if quieter than Istanbul's. The real draw is a large, settled international community, bigger than you'd find in many Turkish cities, alongside a strong sense of local culture. High art, museums, and nightlife stay modest.

Turkish is the working language and the practical key to local life, though English and Russian go a long way within the sizeable expat and resort community. Antalya is notably open to foreigners and used to newcomers, so finding a circle is easy. Integrating deeply with locals still takes the language.

A real split. The airport is a major international hub with broad direct connections, and road congestion stays mild. But intercity rail is nearly absent, internet speeds lag well behind European norms, and public transit and cycling provision are limited, so a car ends up doing a lot of the work.

Moderately secular by Turkish standards and visibly open to foreigners, but socially conservative overall. Social liberalism, gender equality, and especially LGBTQ acceptance score low, in line with the wider national picture. Newcomers from more progressive places will feel the shift in everyday norms.

A middling, paperwork-heavy move. Residence permits are doable but bureaucratic, work authorization is harder still, and banking and housing admin take patience. The language barrier is real away from the expat bubble, though cultural adjustment is eased by how accustomed the city is to outsiders.
